Description of Project
In February 2022, Elite Fire Protection was requested by a Quantity Surveyor, who was already involved in the upgrade of the mall, to complete a tender for upgrade of smoke detection.
The mall is approximately 40 kilometers from Johannesburg. It is a two-storey shopping center with the two levels of retail positioned in a step formation. The upper level lies on the northern portion of the land, and the lower level lies on the southern portion of the land.
The mall is situated in the center of a township area providing easy access to the community of groceries, casual and formal clothing, sports clothing, furniture and banking.
Elite Fire Protection is currently responsible for the installation and upgrade of the smoke detection system.

Installation of Smoke Detection

Elite Fire Protection was awarded the tender to upgrade the mall’s smoke detection system.
The company was responsible for supplying and installing equipment/parts to upgrade the existing fire system to the standard protocol for the installed fire panel.
The project scope included the entire mall and not specific to an area or shop.
The project included:
- Replacement of dirty pre-alarm devices
- Replacement of faulty and broken call points
- Replacement of old fire cable PH30
- Supply of batteries, additional sounders & zone charts
- Commissioning of the system
The number of smoke detectors installed and/or replaced was approximately 200.
Challenges
A few tenants were not willing to allow the team to work during trading hours or to assist after hours to allow access. We overcame this challenge by corresponding with center management to arrange set times with both parties.
