Description of Project
In 2021, Elite Fire was approached by an existing client of the company to revisit their store.
This superstore is a South African based discount store trading in each province in South Africa. Retailing groceries, the company focuses on fresh produce, basic house products and building material.
The client had very recently revamped the store and requested Elite Fire to send a technician through to visit the site to re-evaluate and inspect the fire protection system, provide a report and quotation accordingly.
The client provided feedback after a few months and Elite Fire was appointed to upgrade the existing fire sprinkler system, hydrants, hose-reels and fire extinguishers.

Process Outline
Fire sprinkler system
We found that the fire sprinkler system required an upgrade according to the new layout of the revamped store.
It was established that an additional 160 sprinklers were required, consisting of a combination of conventional and white pendent ceiling sprinklers. Since additional sprinklers were required, this meant that new piping was needed as well.
As a standard practise due to aging, existing piping and sprinklers were removed for testing. This is a requirement according to SABS standards.
They are currently being tested and we await the outcome.
Hydrants and Sprinkler Control Valve
While reviewing the new layout, we confirmed that existing hydrant quantities were sufficient for the revamped superstore but required a service to be completed.
While on site, we informed the client that the existing sprinkler control valve was due for a service and Elite Fire was given the go ahead to proceed with its service during the month of June.
Hose-reels and Fire Extinguishers
Within the report we noted that the existing hose-reels and fire extinguishers needed to be repositioned according to the new layout.
In addition to the repositioning, additional quantities of hose-reels and fire extinguishers were required to suit the new layout and comply with fire safety standards.
Challenges
Elite Fire is only allowed to work after hours as the superstore is fully functional during the day which may delay completion times, however, a realistic completion date was provided according to access.
